EQ Workshops for Schools
What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?
Emotions are valuable signals that help us survive and thrive. When we learn how to use them, emotions support us in making more effective decisions, connect with others, find and follow purpose — and lead a more whole-hearted life.
Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the capacity to blend thinking and feeling to make optimal decisions — which is key to having a successful relationship with yourself and others.
In 1997, Six Seconds© developed an actionable model of EQ that is practiced by hundreds of thousands of individuals, schools, and businesses throughout the world.
This model of EQ begins with three important pursuits:
Know yourself: to become more aware (noticing what you feel and do),
Choose yourself: to be more intentional (doing what you mean)
Give Yourself: to be more purposeful (doing it for a reason).
EQ Competencies and Workshop Pedagogy
EQ can be learnt! Workshops are experiential in nature. Through creating safe spaces to draw out personal narratives, students learn to discover and apply the following Six Seconds© EQ competencies in their personal life contexts and situations.

Why EQ?
Researchers at Six Seconds© have shown that students who develop their EQ competencies will have higher scores for good health, relationship quality, personal achievement, life satisfaction, and self-efficacy (Jensen, Fieldeldey-van Dijk, Freedman, 2012). (Source of graphic: Six Seconds©)
This means that enjoy greater success in and out of the classroom, are more likely to develop and maintain healthy social relationships and are more likely to be healthy mentally and physically. They learn to build optimism resilience and begin to discover one’s sense of purpose and direction in life.

EQ Assessments
SEI Assessment for Youth
The Social Emotional Intelligence Youth Version (SEI-YV) is meant for youth aged 8-18 years old. It provides youth, family members, educators, and counselors with a powerful tool for growth.
The SEI-YV begins with an assessment of important life-outcomes – the “Barometers of Life” which include Good Health, Relationship Quality, Life Satisfaction, Personal Achievement, Self-Efficacy, and an overall composite.
It also gives each student a personal detailed EQ profile, showing the student's EQ competencies: where the student's strengths are and where the areas of growth lie and how the student compares to other youth in general.
Each report is accompanied by a debrief either with the teacher/ year head/ level head/ school counselor or/ and with the student by a certified Six Seconds © SEI-YV Assessor.
More information can be found at the Six Seconds© website here.
SEI Assessment for Adults
The adult version of the SEI is also available for staff to know themselves and their EQ profile better for personal growth. In this way, both staff and students will share a common EQ language for growing together as a school.
